Leah Fullerlove.
The Junior Club Championships are being held on Sunday, 25th May,
commencing 10.00 am and finishing approximately 4.00 pm. Parental
support is requested, as there will be four matches running
concurrently in the early stages. The categories are:
Open: 13 & Under and 11 & Under Handicap: 13 & Over and Under 13
All juniors are welcome and there is a plate competition for first
round losers. To enter, see the junior notice board or contact Jon

392495 or J.Colton@Sky.com.
Club Nights
Apologies to all those who turned up for Club Night on 21st April only
to find that it had been suspended for three weeks during the
tournaments. We should have notified members, particularly the newer
ones, but we are now back to normal. For those who are unaware, Club
Night is every Monday and starts at 7.00 pm. Players rotate by having
one game, up to 21, American scoring, with as many different players as
time permits. There is a charge of £2 per head apart from the
juniors, who do not pay.
Tennis
The tournaments are now underway and the finals are on Sunday, 15th
June, so make a diary note to spend the day at the club watching our
finest tennis players in action from about 11-00 am. A BBQ is being
arranged - but it will be a DIY job and cook your own meat.
The Saturday morning roll-ups are a good way to meet new players over a
social game of doubles. The court fee is £2 per head and it runs
from 10.00-12.00 am.
Please remember to secure the door when you are last to leave the courts.
Racketball & Table Tennis
Racketball has been run successfully alongside the squash tournaments
but is hardly played any other time of year. It has a larger, more
bouncy ball than squash with short-handled rackets and we would be
interested to know if there was enough support to start a league.
We had a few, positive replies to our e-mail regarding table tennis but
we need someone to organise a regular session, or we will sell the
table as it is used so infrequently.
If you would like to play racketball regularly or can help with table
tennis, please contact the Secretary, Gerry Gulson on 01372 277426
(daytime) or gerrygulson@ntlworld.com.
Social Events
The monthly quiz night, on the last Friday of the month just after the
100 Club draw, continues to attract a good number, although George can
always find room for an extra team.
There is a Summer Solstice music evening on Saturday, 21st June with singing by Jackie – see George for tickets.
Ashtead Village Day is on Saturday, 14th June and we will be represented as usual.
Tradesmen (and women!)
We would like to hold a list of members who may be able to help in an
emergency (plumber, electrician, etc) and those with particular
skills/abilities who don’t mind helping with the odd job around
the club. Any help is greatly appreciated – please contact Gerry
Gulson as above.
Court Fees
The committee has been concerned for some while that the appropriate
court fee is not being paid by some members and this not only deprives
the club of income but has an adverse effect on the vast majority who
always pay. We have therefore decided to charge those members not
paying before, or immediately after playing, double the fee not paid.
When paying using an envelope, please print clearly your name, the date
and court number.
Thanks - to all those who cleaned the shower areas and helped with the gardening effort over two recent Sundays.
The Committee
May 2008
NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 2007
This informs you about the club’s Annual General
Meeting to be held on Friday 18th January (see below) and gives a news
update.
Social Events
The Committee in conjunction with the Club Manager,
George, is aiming to increase the activity at the club. This is to
invite you to join in and also to ask if members can assist in getting
one or two new ones up and running.
See above for current dates.
You are also invited to use the club for special Christmas dinners and
lunches - contact George for further information.
To help develop the social events further, we would like to hear from
members who are willing to help
- To help the social secretary with organising events -
please contact Mick Claxton (tel 274873)
- We would like to get a monthly bridge evening
going. So we’d like to hear from anyone who would
be interested in taking part. This is unlikely to be a high
powered level of expertise so please don’t be shy. Also from
anyone able to provide or obtain some of the equipment particularly
bridge tables. Also from anyone willing to help organise this.
- We are also expecting to run an
“olympic” games evening in the new year.
- We would be interested to know from members who would be
interested in a regular snooker / pool / darts evening (say monthly or
even weekly).
Private Parties
You are reminded that the club offers an excellent venue for
members’ private parties. For those who are
unfamiliar with what’s on offer - the use of the lounge
and if required one or more courts which are decorated with
drapes to give the right atmosphere. The preferred night is
of the week is a Saturday when the club is not used for squash
play. George and Lynn can provide for your catering
needs. The costs are £50 for the use of the lounge
and £60 per court - to reflect the extra costs of
preparing the court and of additional bar staff.

Leaflet drop
We are planning a leaflet drop in Ashtead to encourage local
people to join up either as playing or social members.
We’d be grateful to hear from members willing to help (or
whose children can be persuaded to help). Contact Griff (tel
01372 363380; email dgriffs@griffs.demon.co.uk).
Membership administration
The annual membership renewal cycle has now been
completed. As part of this the membership database now
contains a high proportion (83% of households) of reliable email
addresses which are being used as the main means of communication with
members. If we do not have yours please give it to Nicky
Bannister (membership@ashteadsquash.org.uk).
The membership numbers show a fall in some categories compared with the
same time last year - squash playing down 4, tennis is up 2, social are
down 22, and juniors are down 24. Overall in income
terms, this is about 5% lower.
Magazine & membership cards from England Squash
Squash players including juniors who are now affiliated to
England Squash received recently a magazine and their membership
card. Unfortunately some were sent to the club rather than to
a home address. These are individually addressed and are
available to members in the club lounge. Please retrieve them
- we will dispose of items not collected by 20 December.
Club Grounds
We are planning a one-off effort to bring up the standard of
the club grounds, in the new year. We need a few volunteers
to give up a few hours - please contact Mike Jardine (tel 0208 3936924
email mjardine@talktalk.net). There are pints in the bar
afterwards.
Club Website
We also are looking for help with the regular updating of the
club website - if anyone has the skills and is willing to give some
time this would be very welcome.
Tennis news
Jono Ward, LTA approved tennis coach, has regular junior
coaching on weekend afternoons. More juniors are welcome. Jono is also
available mid-week for adults - good way to get off those extra pounds
after Christmas. Details of coaching can be found on the club notice
board or contact Jono on 07940 749699.
Regular social tennis continues every Saturday morning and Tuesday
evenings under floodlights.
